The Australian Hillclimb Championship was first run in 1938, the same year hillclimbing started at Mt Panorama and, to celebrate seventy years of the championship, together with seventy years of motor sport at Mt Panorama, Bathurst Light Car Club will conduct the Peter Rogers Bathurst Real Estate 2008 Australian Hillclimb Championship.

1956 saw the first Australian Hillclimb Championship conducted at Mt Panorama won by Alan Davison driving a Cooper-Vincent. 2008 will be the ninth time the championship has been held on the mountain as a single event or as part of a series.

Mt Panorama has seen the sport develop to the point where the championship and the mountain are attracting the best Australia and the world can produce. In 1996 Mike Pilbeam and former British champion Alister Douglas-Osborne brought one of Mike's Pilbeam cars to Australia. Victory that year was denied to the challengers by Wollongong's Peter Gumley in an aging SCV.

In 2006 the British challenged again, this time through Victorian champion Andrew Howell entering his new Gould GR55B and sharing the car with the British champion Martin Groves. Their challenge on the mountain was overseen by David Gould company principal of Gould cars and assisted by Mike Endean from Nicholson McLaren Engines.

The Peter Rogers Bathurst Real Estate 2006 Australian Hillclimb Championship saw four drivers hold the outright record and lead at one point over the two days of competition. The championship came down to the last run, three drivers had bettered the old record several times but on his last run Western Australia's Garry West threw his Lola at the mountain to take the outright record and his second Australian Hillclimb Championship.
